PC will always be superior in terms of playability.Īgain, don't fill the whole with a pile of shit instead of fixing what's currently broken. Regarding launching the game to new platforms, I agree that it makes sense in terms of reach but I do not agree that it should be a focus if the main game, which was lanched for PC is currently dying. Rather have 10 players playing 1300 games per week, way more benefitial. Having 1300 people playing 10 games per day doesn't add anything. Retention strategy on marketing is not about giving up prospecting new players, it's about prospecting new players and having a good plan to make then KEEP there as real clients. I said old players compose the most of the player base. I'm not saying we should focus ONLY on old players. It's what we've been doing before, now we want to reach out to a new (and likely younger) audience by releasing on mobile platforms. Originally Posted by sir What exactly lead you to this statement? However there are workaround a being out into practice for these problems with he standalone s, so it won't be this way forever. So I suggest using the Steam version instead, as that does function. Of the Adriatic headland and the water of Eridanos, He borrows the chariot of Helios for a day driving too near the earth, he sets it afire, Zeus then strikes him dead with his thunderbolt, and Phaethon falls from the sky.īy the banks of this river Eridanos, the Daughters of the Sun mourn for the fallen Phaethon: At his mother’s behest, Phaethon travels to Aithiopia, the abode of Helios, in a quest to prove that the Sun is truly his father. His real father, however, is not the mortal Merops but the sun-god Helios. Phaethon, the story goes, was raised as the son of Merops and Klymene. In this passage, Phaeton’s mother is Klymene. He also quotes a passage from Euripides about the sisters. Nagy in his book Greek Mythology & Poetics writes in Chapter 9 about Phaeton and his sisters. If they do not square accounts with me about my cows, I will go down to Hadēs and shine there among the dead.’ Meanwhile Lampetie of the light robes went straight off to the sun and told him we had been killing his cows, whereon he flew into a great rage, and said to the immortals, ‘Father Zeus, and all you other gods who live in everlasting bliss, I must have vengeance on the crew of Laertes’ son Odysseus’ ship: they have had the insolence to kill my cows, which were the one thing I loved to look upon, whether I was going up the sky or down again. If you leave these flocks unharmed, and think of nothing but getting home, you may yet after much hardship reach Ithaca but if you harm them, then I forewarn you of the destruction both of your ship and of your comrades… Their mother when she had borne them and had done suckling them sent them to the Thrinacian island, which was a long way off, to live there and look after their father’s flocks and herds. They do not breed, nor do they become fewer in number, and they are tended by the goddesses with sweet hair, Phaethousa and Lampetie, who are children of the sun-god Hyperion by Neaira. You will now come to the Thrinacian island, and here you will see many herds of cattle and flocks of sheep belonging to the sun-god, Helios-seven herds of cattle and seven flocks of sheep, with fifty head in each flock. In the Odyssey we learn about the two sisters. However, the story of Phaeton’s sisters, Phaethousa ‘radiance,’ and Lempetia ‘shining,’ the daughters of the sun-god Helios, starts with Homer. The painter Claude Lorrain got his inspiration from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Different versions may be found about who they are and who is their mother. The painting represents the sisters of Phaeton lamenting for their brother after his tragic death. I often go to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts but I did not notice this painting until last month. They found that only those species with at least partially opposable thumbs were fooled, suggesting that having similar anatomy (and therefore biomechanical ability) plays a vital role in the illusion. To learn more about how humans experience such misdirection, researchers in the UK performed simple magic tricks for three species of monkeys to see if they could be fooled. The key to a successful sleight-of-hand magic trick is how well a magician manipulates the audience's perception, especially of manual movements, since that is crucial to how we anticipate another's actions. But, says Everett, “I felt like I wanted to do something that’s closer to the heart”.Īnd one of the through-lines of her life, says the comedian, is how “very lonely” she was during her decades-long search to find her “people” and her professional niche, not to mention how feeling you don’t belong is still close to the surface for her, even though she’s since found professional recognition and, more importantly, the necessary coping skills to manage the ache. The Strange Little Cat can feel like a whirring toy, a screen brimming with pointillist delights, and then one look at the subtle yet lingering grief on the mother’s drawn face and the playful surfaces suddenly pulse with melancholy, even ominous undercurrents. People come and go within these fixed, slightly off-center frames, bits of eccentricity become running gags, and every cut is a droll new visual opening. In his feature debut, Zürcher displays a limpid sensory approach (the rattle of appliances is as much a compositional element as the sun emanating from a window) that’s been justly compared to Jacques Tati’s, though the tight planar arrangements often seem closer to mid-1970s Chantal Akerman. Through it all wanders the eponymous orange feline, a silent witness except for a purr that can hypnotize even the household’s pooch. A teenage girl tells of a dream about orange peels, a boy outside plays hacky sack, a corked bottle suddenly pops and smashes a light bulb. The stage, so to speak, is a teeming Berlin apartment where three familial generations-from the grandmother dozing in the bedroom to the little daughter merrily shrieking by the kitchen table-participate in little choreographies of domestic bustle. Ramon Zürcher’s The Strange Little Cat is another small miracle, a compressed, oblique, peculiarly funny and beguiling exploration of shared spaces. Four different, unseen characters pouring their memories onto the screen, or the same incantatory spirit moving between nations and years as part of the same yearning conscious? Gomes’ braiding of textures both scratchy and lush is lyrical, mischievous, and profoundly emotional.īack to features. Finally, a young German bride in 1977 recounts her wedding-day sorrow, a sadness exacerbated by her inescapable love for the music of “that fascist” Wagner. Next, the narration is passed on to a French politician in 2012, letting his daughter know that he won’t be holding an important position and, worse, he won’t be able to come to her birthday parties any time soon. The voice rushing us along becomes elderly for the following segment, as an aged Milanese man ponders post-war Italy and his own lost love via a kaleidoscope of newsreels and film clips. It’s 1975, and a child’s voice narrates a letter to the parents who stayed in Africa, expressing the longing for a fantasy land that could hardly be more different from the Portuguese countryside captured in faded home movies. A found-footage poem in four stanzas, it begins along the lines of Gomes’ great Tabu, with tribal drums and colonial wanderers. There’s an affectingly Warholian tinge to these micro-portraits of exotic dancers, bodybuilders, carpenters and teachers modeling with earnest cluelessness for Rodrigues, and, at just over 30 minutes, the filmmaker’s queering joke on Portugal’s mythical body politic doesn’t wear out its welcome.įor me, the program’s revelation was Redemption, 26 tremendously dense minutes which should cement Miguel Gomes’ position as a modern master of melodic cine-fusions. As the green-screen background parachutes them into a variety of historical spots, some twenty men strip for the camera, wield medieval blades, and awkwardly read historical letters. There their similarities end, however: whereas Straub gets his mysterious effects from sun-dappled tableaux punctured by darkness, the rustling of leaves and Barbara Ulrich’s reading of the text, Rodrigues envisions a different form of performance through a parade of sinewy beefcake. Following Un conte de Michel de Montaigne, João Pedro Rodrigues’ The King’s Body also uses a statue as a recurring image-not the smilingly contemplative Montaigne of Jean-Marie Straub’s splendid recitation, but the armored-for-battle Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first conquering monarch. Imagery and rhythm are self-sufficient pleasures, and the three-part Wavelengths program we saw showcased plenty of these elements. I often drag my feet going to experimental projects-you know, from our conversations, that I’m far more of a narrative guy-and yet I always marvel at the beauties I find in them.
